How do you train people to do what they do very rarely?

frustrated personI am frustrated each time I need to do something that I do rarely, when I do not remember what I did last time. I typically search for notes I made last time (rare) or start all over (common). For example, there are shortcuts to use to close windows and shut down my computer when it locks up (which happens often enough to be exasperating but not often enough so I have memorized the shortcuts). Then I get to try to find the quick reference sheet (which I cannot find right now). So I have to do a search… and so on.

Are you training folks to do things that they do rarely? If so, it’s a good idea to realize that they will be in similar situations and take measures to help them through these situations. Here are a few ways to ease this situation:

  • Set up interim practice sessions that help learners practice so they can more easily remember the information, procedure, etc. when they need it.
  • Consider a variety of ways to help people recall information they need to know… sometimes. The more often they think though what they need to remember, the easier it will be for them to remember it. Ideas: mobile reminders, pop quizzes in related courses, games with prizes, etc.
  • Provide an easy-to-access, easy-to-search, and easy-to-use repository of performance support tools such as job aids, demos, and so on.

The approach that will work best depends on a variety of factors. But because this is a common problem, it’s a problem you should consider each time you develop instruction.
